World Anti-Counterfeiting Day

Today, the 5th of June, is celebrated as the World Anti-Counterfeiting Day. This day has been marked by several national and international entities through the launch of events and campaigns that highlight the dangers and consequences of the trade of counterfeiting and piracy goods.

These awareness campaigns alert the consumer to the health risks linked to this kind of products and to the associated economic consequences. According to the report “Trade in Counterfeit and Pirated Goods”, recently launched by the EUIPO and OCDE, the counterfeited and pirated goods are equivalent to 5% of all European imports, covering not only clothing and shoes, but also food and pharmaceutical products. The toys and games sector has also been affected. According to the 4th Sectorial Study on the economic impact of counterfeiting and piracy, 12.3% of sales are lost by the sector due to counterfeiting.

With the purpose to alert the consumers to the risks associated to the consumption of these products, the European Observatory on Infringements of Intellectual Property Rights supports several national campaigns, among which we draw attention to the app “Hacker Fighter”. This is a pirate game, developed by Universidade da Beira Interior (UBI), that presents the concepts and definitions of IP, putting the player in the role of a scientist that wants to protect his industrial property. The first version of this game is now available in Google Play (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.PI.hfighter) and Apple Store (ver https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/hfighter/id1114500993?l=pt&ls=1&mt=8).
